Baklosan (Baclofen): what kind of drug it is, how it works, signs of use, consequences, addiction treatment - Narcologist at MSK Clinic

In modern realities, more and more people are pathologically dependent on various synthetic drugs. The universal availability of these drugs only increases the risk of developing drug addiction. Some of the drugs sought by drug addicts are widely used in traditional medicine for the treatment and correction of various pathological conditions.

Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

Pharmacodynamics

Baklosan is a centrally acting muscle relaxant GABAB receptor inhibitor . Reduces the excitability of the distal parts of the sensory fibers carrying nerve impulses and inhibits the intermediate cells of the nervous system. As a result, synaptic transmission of impulses is inhibited; reduction in muscle fiber tension. The drug does not affect the transmission of nerve impulses at muscle-nervous synapses.

For diseases characterized by pathological constant contractility of skeletal muscles, the drug Baclosan relieves cramps and painful spasms. The drug increases the range of motion in the joints, simplifies kinesiotherapy (massage, gymnastics, manual therapy).

Pharmacokinetics

After taking Baklosan tablets, they are highly adsorbed in the intestines. The maximum concentration in the blood is observed three hours after administration of the drug.

Plasma protein binding reaches 30%. The drug penetrates the placental barrier and is excreted in breast milk. Metabolism occurs in the liver. Excreted in urine in its original form.

Baclofen - tablets for treatment or a drug?

Baclosan (Baclofen) is a synthetic drug that belongs to the group of muscle relaxants.
It is used in traditional medical practice to relieve epileptic attacks and correct spastic reactions in various muscle groups that are provoked by various diseases. But, unfortunately, baclofen is a drug that is widely popular in the criminal world. The pathological interest in this drug is explained by the mechanism of action of the drug Baclofen on the central nervous system. What does the drug do to a person that the frequency of pathological dependence on these pills regularly increases:

  • dulls mental reactions, reduces the effect of third-party stimuli on the receptors of the nervous system;
  • promotes the appearance of hallucinations;
  • helps to relax and get rid of fatigue;
  • improves mood and resistance to stress;
  • relieves muscle spasms.

Traditional neurology and neurosurgery recommend the use of the drug Baclofen for medicinal purposes. What do doctors prescribe medicine for?

  • spastic processes;
  • epilepsy;
  • traumatic brain injuries;
  • surgical interventions on the spinal cord.

Systematic use of baclofen tablets leads to the formation of receptor resistance at the biochemical level.
Therefore, the patient constantly requires increasing dosages of the drug to obtain the desired effect. Drug addicts constantly increase the amount of baclofen. Drug addicts don’t even think about the fact that unauthorized use of a medication leads to irreversible consequences. Abuse of the drug leads to receptor resistance to regular use of Baclofen tablets. An overdose due to a significant excess of the doses recommended by the doctor occurs almost instantly and is manifested by the following symptoms:

  • constriction of the pupils, their nonspecific reaction to light;
  • myalgia of varying nature and intensity;
  • seizure activity;
  • heart rhythm disturbances, which are manifested by increased heart rate or tachycardia;
  • depressive states;
  • inadequate reaction to external stimuli;
  • acute disturbances in the functioning of the digestive system (vomiting, intestinal colic, abdominal pain).

Contraindications

Contraindications to the use of Baklosan are:

  • Parkinson's disease;
  • psychoses;
  • seizures (including in the past);
  • epilepsy;
  • lactose intolerance lactase deficiency , malabsorption ;
  • stomach or duodenal ulcer;
  • pregnancy;
  • lactation period;
  • allergy to the components of the drug.

Baklosan is used with caution in cases of insufficient blood supply to the brain, atherosclerosis of cerebral vessels, renal failure , in the elderly and children under three years of age.

For what pathologies is Baklosan dangerous?

The drug used in a therapeutic dose has contraindications. If a drug addict is unable to refuse the drug being described, then he should at least understand for what pathologies Baklosan is contraindicated. This:

  • Parkinson's disease is a degenerative lesion of nervous tissue that causes trembling of the arms and legs, stiffness, and slowness of movements;
  • cerebrovascular insufficiency - a disorder of cerebral circulation due to vascular damage;
  • persistent renal failure - deterioration of kidney function;
  • atherosclerosis of cerebral vessels - deposition of cholesterol plaques on their inner surface;
  • peptic ulcer of the stomach and duodenum - the formation of one or more deep defects in the wall of these organs.

Side effects

  • From the musculoskeletal system: myalgia .
  • From the nervous system: weakness, dizziness, gait disturbance, insomnia, sedation , depression , euphoria , asthenia , tremor , hallucinations, nightmares, nystagmus , paresthesia , dysarthria .
  • From the respiratory system: respiratory depression.
  • From the cardiovascular system: decreased cardiac output , hypotension .
  • From the organs of vision: visual disturbances.
  • From the digestive system: diarrhea , constipation , dyspepsia , nausea, abdominal pain, liver damage.
  • From the genitourinary system: enuresis , polyuria , urinary retention, and sometimes erectile dysfunction .
  • Skin: hyperhidrosis .
  • General disorders: decreased temperature.

In extremely rare cases, an increase in spasms was detected, which was assessed as a paradoxical effect of taking the drug.

Instructions for use of Baklosan (Method and dosage)

Instructions for use of Baklosan recommend taking the drug orally with food. If one dose of the drug was missed by mistake, the next time you should not take a double dose.

Adults

The starting dose is 5 mg (half a 10 mg tablet) three times a day, increasing the dose by 5 mg every three days and so on until the therapeutic effect occurs (usually 30-75 mg per day is sufficient). The maximum daily dose is 100 mg.

The final dose should not decrease muscle tone, cause significant myasthenia , or impair motor function.

For renal failure or during hemodialysis , the daily dose is 5 mg.

In persons over 65 years of age, the dose should be increased with caution, as they are at high risk of developing side effects.

Children

The starting dose is 5 mg three times a day. If necessary, the dose can be increased every three days by 5 mg until a therapeutic effect appears.

Recommended doses: for children aged 3-6 years – 20-30 mg/day; 6-10 years – 30-60 mg/day; over 10 years of age, the maximum daily dose is 2.5 mg/kg of body weight, the starting dose is 1.5-2 mg/kg of body weight.

The drug is withdrawn slowly (within 10-14 days).

Use of Baklosan during pregnancy and lactation

Clinical studies examining the effect of Baklosan on the fetus have not been conducted. But it has been proven that the drug overcomes the placental barrier and enters directly into the bloodstream of the unborn child. In newborns whose mothers were treated with Baklosan, drug withdrawal syndrome was observed after birth, for the relief of which it was necessary to use anticonvulsant drugs.

During lactation, Baklosan metabolites penetrate into breast milk, which does not exclude the possibility of the development of neurological, mental and somatic disorders in the child’s body. For these reasons, doctors do not recommend using the drug during pregnancy and breastfeeding. If there is a need to take a muscle relaxant, it is advisable to prescribe the drug from the second trimester of gestation, weighing all the risks to the fetus and the potential benefits to the mother.

Interaction

When used together, Baklosan activates the action of drugs that affect the nervous system, lower blood pressure, anti-gout drugs, and alcohol.

When Baklosan is taken simultaneously with tricyclic antidepressants, a pronounced decrease in muscle tone develops.

You should not take Baclosan with carbidopa and levodopa , as confusion and hallucinations may occur.

Balkofen. Consequences of illegal use

Inhibition of the action of the central nervous system is often negative and can lead to irreversible consequences:

  • heart failure;
  • stopping spontaneous breathing;
  • disruption of the nervous regulation of vital organs;
  • the appearance of malignant tumors in the central and peripheral nervous system.

In addition, significantly exceeding the dosages recommended by experts leads to negative consequences from taking Baclofen tablets. Side effects at high dosages:

  • gastrointestinal bleeding;
  • severe intoxication;
  • acute renal or liver failure;
  • memory problems;
  • loss of consciousness;
  • acute heart failure;
  • seizures that are difficult to stop.

These negative reactions are explained by the effect of the drug Baclofen on nerve cells.
An overdose develops quite quickly. This is due to the specific effect of the main drug on nerve receptors. This condition requires urgent specialized care to prevent negative consequences and death. Only in a specialized clinic can you get rid of biochemical and psycho-emotional dependence on baklosan and its derivatives.

Reviews about Baklosan

Recommendations and reviews of Baklosan indicate that most patients were satisfied with the results of using the drug. It is rare to read negative reviews about Baklosan tablets associated with side effects.

A number of patients in drug treatment clinics often use the drug in combination with certain drugs. In this case, baklosan is capable of causing a trip or “high.” It is known that such use of the drug results in the development of addiction.

How to “get off” the drug Baklosan?

This is a question often asked by patients. If withdrawal syndrome occurs as a result of using the drug in recommended doses, then discontinuation of use should be done gradually over two weeks. If addiction has arisen as a result of unauthorized use of the drug to achieve a narcotic effect, then you need to seek help from a narcologist.

Abstinence

Abstinence is associated with the development of physical dependence. This is a pathological condition that appears when you abruptly stop using the described drug. This happens if the product has been used for more than two months. Observed:

  • hypermetabolism - an increase in energy expenditure that is not associated with mental or physical activity;
  • muscle rigidity (stiffness);
  • a sharp increase in temperature - more than 41 degrees Celsius.

In complex cases, disturbances in the functioning of internal organs may occur. Nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, increased heart rate, and decreased blood pressure appear. Such symptoms disappear if the suffering addict takes the dose of the drug that he usually uses for its psychotropic effect.
