    Directions for use and dosage

The drug is taken orally. It is necessary to take 2 tablets of the drug POSTINOR in the first 72 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse. The second tablet should be taken 12 hours (but not later than 16 hours) after taking the first tablet.

To achieve a more reliable effect, both Postinor contraceptive pills should be taken as soon as possible after unprotected intercourse (no later than 72 hours).

If vomiting occurs within 3 hours after the 1st or 2nd dose of Postinor tablet, then you should take another Postinor tablet.

The drug Postinor can be used at any time of the menstrual cycle for the purpose of emergency contraception. In case of irregular menstrual cycle, pregnancy must first be excluded.

How often can you take POSTINOR?

The use of the drug during repeated unprotected sexual intercourse during one menstrual cycle is not recommended due to an increase in the frequency of acyclic bleeding. After taking emergency contraception, use a local barrier method (eg, condom, cervical cap) until your next period.

    Menstruation after taking POSTINOR

Gynecologists say that your periods should come as usual. But often women taking the drug POSTINOR noted the arrival of menstruation ahead of schedule. There are also situations where there is a delay in menstruation. If the delay is more than 10 days, then it is necessary to conduct a rapid test to determine pregnancy.

    POSTINOR for abortion

The drug is used exclusively for the purpose of emergency contraception, when no more than 72 hours have passed after unprotected sexual intercourse. Other methods are used to terminate pregnancy at a later stage.

Use of POSTINOR on the day of ovulation

The drug can be taken on any day of the menstrual cycle.

    POSTINOR before or after meals

The drug is used regardless of food intake.

    pharmachologic effect

Postinor is a synthetic gestagen with a contraceptive effect, pronounced gestagenic and antiestrogenic properties. With the recommended dosing regimen, levonorgestrel suppresses ovulation and fertilization if sexual intercourse occurs in the preovulatory phase, when the possibility of fertilization is greatest. It may also cause changes in the endometrium that prevent implantation. The drug is not effective if implantation has already occurred.

Efficacy: with the help of Postinor tablets, pregnancy can be prevented in approximately 85% of cases. The more time passes between sexual intercourse and taking the drug, the lower its effectiveness (95% during the first 24 hours, 85% from 24 to 48 hours and 58% from 48 to 72 hours). Thus, it is recommended to start taking Postinor tablets as soon as possible (but no later than 72 hours) after sexual intercourse, if no protective measures have been taken. At the recommended dose, levonorgestrel does not have a significant effect on blood clotting factors, fat and carbohydrate metabolism.

    How long does POSTINOR last?

The drug reaches its maximum concentration after oral administration after 1.6 hours. The half-life is 26 hours.

How to understand that POSTINOR has worked

If the drug was used according to the instructions for medical use, namely as soon as possible, but no later than 72 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse, then the drug will perform its function of emergency contraception. Menstruation should come as usual, without any obvious changes in the quantity or quality of discharge.

    Precautionary measures

With caution: diseases of the liver and biliary tract, jaundice (including a history), Crohn's disease, lactation.

    POSTINOR during pregnancy

Contraindicated for use during pregnancy. If pregnancy occurs while using an emergency method of contraception, then based on the available data, no adverse effect of the drug on the fetus has been identified.

Levonorgestrel is excreted in breast milk. After taking the drug, breastfeeding should be stopped for 24 hours.

    Why is POSTINOR dangerous?

The appearance of pain in the lower abdomen and fainting may indicate an ectopic (ectopic) pregnancy.

    special instructions

Postinor should be used exclusively for emergency contraception. Repeated use of the drug Postinor during one menstrual cycle is not recommended.

The effectiveness of Postinor tablets after unprotected sexual intercourse, during which contraception was not used, decreases over time:

    • 24 hours or less - 95% efficiency;
    • 25-48 hours - 85% efficiency;
    • 49-72 hours - effectiveness 58%.

The drug does not replace the use of permanent methods of contraception. In most cases, Postinor does not affect the nature of the menstrual cycle. However, acyclic bleeding and a delay of menstruation for several days are possible. If menstruation is delayed by more than 5-7 days and its character changes (scanty or heavy discharge), pregnancy must be excluded.

    • Adolescents under 16 years of age, in exceptional cases (including rape), need to consult a gynecologist to confirm pregnancy.
    • After emergency contraception, a consultation with a gynecologist is recommended to select the most appropriate method of permanent contraception.
    • Emergency contraception does not protect against sexually transmitted diseases.
    • In case of gastrointestinal dysfunction (for example, Crohn's disease), the effectiveness of the drug may be reduced.
    • The effect of Postinor on the ability to drive vehicles and operate machinery has not been studied.

Description of the drug: to whom and when it is prescribed

The main active ingredient is levonorgestrel in a dosage of 0.75 mg. Additional substances: starch, talc, lactose, colloidal silicon dioxide.

Postinor is available only in the form of white tablets, packaged in two pieces in a blister and a cardboard box complete with instructions. Manufacturer: Hungary.

The main purpose is to suppress ovulation and prevent fertilization if unprotected sexual intercourse occurs during a period favorable for conception. Under the influence of the drug, the surface of the uterus changes and does not allow the zygote to attach. If the egg has already been fertilized and implantation has occurred, the drug will not be effective.

The pills are taken only to urgently prevent pregnancy, are allowed for occasional use and are not able to completely replace the main methods of birth control. The use of Postinor several times within one menstrual cycle is undesirable. This can cause disruptions - the appearance of sudden bleeding or delays in menstruation.

    Indications:

    1. Emergency contraception if the chosen means of birth control is unreliable. For example, a condom breaks or a missed dose of oral contraceptives.
    2. Postcoital contraception during unprotected sexual intercourse.
    3. Rape.

The pharmaceutical product is stored for 5 years from the date of manufacture at a temperature of no more than 30 °C. After using the medicine, pregnancy can be planned no earlier than 3-4 months later.

    How to take Postinor

The medicine is taken orally; there are no restrictions on the time of day or food intake. If the menstrual cycle is not regular, it is important to rule out pregnancy before taking the pills.

Instructions for use of Postinor provide the following course: 1 tablet twice a day with a time interval of 12 hours. It is very important to remember to take the second tablet on time. It does not need to be crushed, and it can be washed down with any drink.

The regimen also involves taking two tablets at once in the first 12 hours. It is prohibited to change the dosage regimen. If a woman vomits within three hours, then she needs to take two more tablets.

According to clinical studies, the probability of preventing an unwanted pregnancy is on average 85%.

The greatest effectiveness was noted when taken on the first day after sexual intercourse. If you take the tablet after 2-3 days, the effectiveness will decrease to 58%. After 72 hours, Postinor no longer makes sense.

The results of use are affected by the use of other medications: for epilepsy, candidiasis or tuberculosis.

If, despite taking emergency contraceptive pills in a timely manner, pregnancy occurs, it is important to be examined by a gynecologist in a timely manner. Most likely, the child’s intrauterine development will not be affected and the pregnancy will proceed normally.
