Directions for use and dosage

The drug is taken orally.

For the purpose of contraception - 1 tablet per day in the evening (preferably at the same time), starting from days 1-5 of the menstrual cycle, for 21 days. Then there is a break for 7 days, during which, as a rule, menstrual-like bleeding occurs. On the eighth day, regardless of whether the bleeding has stopped, begin the next 21-day course, taking tablets from a new package. If you follow the recommended rules for taking the drug, the contraceptive effect of Ovidon also persists for a 7-day break.

If the drug is well tolerated, it can be used for a long time, until the woman plans to become pregnant.

After an abortion, you can start taking contraceptives immediately on the day of the operation or on the second day after it.

After childbirth (if the woman is not breastfeeding), administration begins after 21 days. When breastfeeding, the drug can be prescribed only 6 months after birth. In this case, a careful assessment of the benefit-risk ratio of using Ovidone is required, since it is excreted in breast milk and also increases the risk of developing thrombosis in the postpartum period (due to the high dose of estrogen in the composition).

If you are late in taking the next pill by less than 12 hours, the contraceptive effect of the drug is not reduced; the missed pill should be taken as early as possible and continued use as usual.

If the break between taking pills was more than 36 hours during the first or second week of the cycle, you need to take two pills at once and continue regular use as usual.

If you miss 2 tablets in a row during the first or second week, it is recommended to take 2 tablets in the next 2 days, and then continue the usual course and use additional methods of contraception until the end of the cycle.

If you miss a pill in the third week of the cycle, in addition to taking the listed measures, you should also abandon the 7-day break in taking Ovidon and immediately start using the pills from the next package.

If emergency contraception is necessary, it is recommended to take 2 tablets of the drug within 72 hours after unprotected sexual intercourse, and then at the same dose 12 hours after the first dose. Within a few days after taking the pills, premature menstruation begins, this confirms the contraceptive effect of the drug. It must be remembered that after using emergency contraception, only barrier methods (condoms) should be used throughout the entire menstrual cycle.

The method of postcoital contraception is less reliable and harmless than regular contraception; as a result, it can only be used in emergency cases.

For medicinal purposes, the dosage regimen is set individually.

OVIDON-RICHTER - abstract Gideon Richter

Before starting to use the drug, it is necessary to conduct a general medical and gynecological examination (primarily measuring blood pressure, determining blood sugar levels, testing liver function, examining the mammary glands, cytological analysis of a cervical smear) to exclude risk-related diseases and pregnancy. Since the drug contains a high amount of estrogen, questioning the patient during a medical examination requires special attention, taking into account the history of previous illnesses. For women with a family history of thromboembolic diseases at a young age or bleeding disorders, the use of Ovidon is not allowed. Particular caution is required in the presence of diabetes mellitus, heart disease of non-ischemic etiology, hypertension, renal dysfunction, thrombophlebitis, otosclerosis, multiple sclerosis, epilepsy, mental illness accompanied by depression, chorea minor, intermittent porphyria, latent tetany, bronchial asthma. While taking the drug, medical supervision is required at least every 6 months. After viral hepatitis, the use of oral contraception is allowed no earlier than 6 months, provided that liver functions are normalized. Against the background of long-term (more than 8 years) continuous use of sex hormones, benign liver tumors were very rarely observed, and malignant tumors of the liver were extremely rare. If sharp pain appears in the upper abdomen, hepatomegaly and signs of intra-abdominal hemorrhage, a suspicion of a liver tumor may arise. In this case, the drug should be stopped until the cause is determined. If liver function is impaired while taking the drug, it is necessary to monitor the condition with a therapist every 2-3 months. In the absence of menstrual-like bleeding, continued use is allowed only after pregnancy has been ruled out. If intermenstrual bleeding occurs (rare due to the high estrogen content), especially in the first 2-3 months, you should continue taking Ovidon, since in most cases these bleeding stops spontaneously. If intermenstrual bleeding does not disappear or recurs, a medical examination is required to exclude pathology of the internal organs. In case of vomiting or diarrhea, taking the pills should be continued, but it is recommended to additionally use another, mechanical method of contraception. Among women taking oral contraceptives containing estrogens, the likelihood of developing thromboembolism of various locations may increase. This risk increases with age, mainly in smokers. In this regard, women over 30 years of age who are taking oral contraceptives are advised to completely stop smoking. If a woman is planning a pregnancy, the drug must be stopped at least three months before the expected date of conception.
You should stop taking Ovidon immediately:
  • in case of new or worsening migraine-like, unusually severe headache, sudden loss of consciousness, acute deterioration of vision, suspected thrombosis or cerebral infarction, sudden pain in the legs, especially the calf muscles;
  • with a sharp increase in arterial pressure, with the development of jaundice or hepatitis without jaundice, with the occurrence of generalized itching, with the occurrence or increase in epileptic seizures;
  • during a planned operation (6 weeks before surgery), during prolonged immobilization (for example, after injuries).
    STORAGE
    At a temperature of 15-30 C, out of the reach of children
    PACKAGE
    1 blister containing 21 tablets.

Side effects

The estrogen contained in the drug can cause the development of symptoms of “false pregnancy”, which include: headache, vomiting, nausea, bloating, vaginal discharge, swelling, engorgement and increased sensitivity of the mammary glands. The presence of gestagen in the drug can contribute to the appearance of: skin rashes, depression, decreased libido, weight gain, vaginal dryness. Also, during use, intermenstrual bleeding may occur, and rarely, allergic reactions and discomfort when wearing contact lenses.

With long-term use of Ovidon, in rare cases, the following may be observed: pigment spots on the skin, acne, hair loss, dry skin and hair, increased blood pressure, liver and gallbladder diseases, increased blood sugar levels, the development of thrombophlebitis, candidiasis, vaginal mycosis.

Before starting to use Ovidon, it is recommended to undergo a complete general medical and gynecological examination (including laboratory tests of liver tests, determination of sugar levels, analysis of cervical smear cytology, mammography). With long-term use of the product, control examinations should be carried out every 6 months.

Women over 35 years of age should use contraception with extreme caution. It should be taken into account that the likelihood of developing thromboembolism increases in the presence of factors such as hereditary predisposition, age after 30 years, and smoking.

The drug should be stopped immediately: at the first signs of thrombophlebitis, thromboembolism or thrombosis, myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular disorders, diplopia, exophthalmos, retinal vascular thrombosis, repeated persistent headaches; with deterioration of visual acuity; for any severe chronic disease; in case of pregnancy (including suspected pregnancy). It is recommended to plan pregnancy 3 months after stopping taking the drug.

During differential diagnosis, it is necessary to take into account the increase in pain in the upper abdomen, signs of intra-abdominal bleeding, and liver enlargement. If you have had viral hepatitis, taking the drug is possible only 6 months after normalization of liver activity.

In the first three months of using Ovidon, intermenstrual bleeding may appear, which subsequently disappears on its own. If irregular bleeding recurs or appears after previous regular cycles, you should consult your doctor to rule out possible diseases of the internal organs.

After emergency contraception, you should be examined by a gynecologist to rule out pregnancy.
