Pharmacodynamics and pharmacokinetics

Povidone-Iodine is a disinfectant that is a complex of iodine with polyvidone, a high-molecular compound that can reduce the toxic effects of iodine on the body's cells. It is characterized by a wide spectrum of antimicrobial action due to a direct effect on the proteins of microorganisms ( proteolytic properties ). It has a partially bactericidal effect on gram-positive and gram-negative cocci and bacilli , as well as on individual anaerobic bacteria, yeast , and also on protozoan viruses .

Allantoin can have an anti-inflammatory effect, which in combination with polyvidone gives a therapeutic effect.

The drug easily penetrates the epithelial of the respiratory tract mucosa and gives a quick effect in acute and chronic diseases.

Iodine in the body is converted into iodides, which are mainly accumulated in the thyroid gland. They are excreted primarily by the kidneys and in small quantities through feces, sweating and salivation.

Pharmacological properties of the drug Yox

The main active substance of the drug is povidone-iodine. This substance releases iodine upon contact with the skin or mucous membrane, which has a wide spectrum of antimicrobial action due to its direct effect on the proteins of microorganisms. The drug also contains allantoin, which has an anti-inflammatory effect. When povidone-iodine is applied topically to intact skin, iodine absorption is minimal. When used in the oral cavity, in the vagina and on damaged skin (significant burns), more pronounced systemic absorption of iodine is noted, which may result in interference with thyroid function. Iodine in the body is converted into iodides, which accumulate mainly in the thyroid gland and are excreted mainly by the kidneys, as well as in small quantities with feces, saliva, and sweat. Iodides pass through the placental barrier and enter breast milk.

Indications for use

  • infectious and inflammatory processes in the oral cavity and pharynx, including tonsillitis , tonsillitis , tonsillopharyngitis , glossitis and aphthous stomatitis ;
  • treatment of the oral cavity and pharynx during surgery on the airways and oral cavity, as well as in the postoperative period;
  • first symptoms of flu ;
  • treatment of various infections of the mouth and throat resulting from chemotherapy ;

The procedure is usually repeated 2–4 times a day, if necessary, every 4 hours. The applicator is washed with hot water before and after use. To rinse, dilute the solution with water in a ratio of 1:20–1:40 (2.5–5 ml using the supplied measuring cup or 1/2 teaspoon in 100 ml of water) and rinse the mouth and throat. Rinse 2–4 times a day, possibly every 4 hours, maximum 6 times a day.

Anuria, swelling of the glottis followed by asphyxia, aspiration pneumonia, or pulmonary edema were noted within 1–3 days. In some cases, significant circulatory disorders were noted.
